Kids’ Menu or Steak? – Pastor Jim Scudder, Jr.

Today’s Scripture: For every one that useth milk is unskillful in the Word of righteousness; for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. Hebrews 5:13-14

When I was a kid, we didn’t have much money, and therefore rarely ate out. When we did eat out, you know what I got? The Children’s menu! One day we walked in, and Julie and I asked for two children’s menus. This caused the hostess to ask my parents how old we were. Well, we were always 12! We just loved getting a hot dog, chicken nuggets, spaghetti or a hamburger! There came a day when the hostess said, “Your son looks like he needs a shave,” so all of a sudden we got an adult menu.

Now I noticed some big differences between the children’s menu and the adult menu. I’m looking at this menu, and I think, “WHOA! This is interesting.” I didn’t know all these foods existed! They had something called Filet Mignon, Prime Rib, and New York Strip. I would see Mom and Dad eating something that looked really appetizing, but I never knew what that was. When the waitress came to me, I replied, “I’ll take the steak.” My dad immediately responded with a gulp!

The moment had come that I was going to learn what steak was. Up to that time, I just had chopped steak. When I got that real steak, it was so tender that I could cut into it with a butter knife. I put it into my mouth, and I said, “It is going to be awfully tough to go back to hamburgers.” My dad realized that innocence had ended in our family, and now it was going to be very expensive to go out to eat.

Have you experienced the joy of digging deep in the Word of God, cutting into the tender, juicy meat? Sometimes the cutting of the tender, juicy meat comes in the form of a trial God brings into our lives. He often does this to prompt us to search out His desires and His will for our lives. To keep moving forward and growing in our Christian walk, we need to attend a good Bible believing Church, read our Bible daily, pray, and get Godly counsel during the confusing times or trials in our lives. These are all part of the process to move us out of the newborn stage to the adult stage in which we can be better used for His glory. As we near that stage, we will be able to understand better how those deep truths fit into our daily life and our daily living and begin applying them in our lives.

In the book of Hebrews, they were struggling with having dull hearing (Hebrews 5:11). The writer of Hebrews admonished them that they were going backwards in their Christian growth and needed to delve deeper into the Scriptures. (Hebrews 5:13 -14)

As for me, I learned that a steak tastes far better than a hamburger. Test your desires regarding the Word of God today. Are you moving backwards or forwards? All can be fixed by desiring and searching God’s Word more!
